Paul Frymoyer is a graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and is currently based in Manilus, New York. His passion for promoting better health has brought him to Africa to help the natives with their health care needs. One of his most memorable trips took place in 2010, when he travelled to Lilongwe, the capital and largest city of Malawi.

Together with his wife Carolyn, Dr. Frymoyer visited the Crisis Nursery in Lilongwe. The facility has 22 orphans under the age of two, who he said looked “amazingly good,” considering they were very sick when they first came to the nursery. He also complimented the competitive staff, which has an abundance of love for the children despite having limited resources. Paul Frymoyer, with his expertise in pediatric nephrology, got involved right away, testing children for HIV and malaria.

As Dr. Frymoyer and his wife traveled through the city, practicing medicine, they are reminded of what a great privilege it is to be physicians, treating malaria (including a case of celebral malaria), tuberculosis, and starvation in all its varied presentations (and the resulting parasites). They also encountered cases of diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension, albeit in much lower frequency than in the United States.

The people of Malawi were very grateful for Dr. Frymoyer’s aid. To show their appreciation, they made sure that the Frymoyers had a comfortable stay in their city. The couple left Lilongwe to explore the rest of Malawi on April 24th, 2010.
